Glycerin C₃H₅(OH)₃

Other names: glycerol, propane-1,2,3-triol. A tri-hydroxy alcohol. Obtained as a by-product in the saponification of vegetable or animal fats, as well as through transesterification in biodiesel production. It is a colorless, oily liquid with a sweetish smell.
Applications:

- For chemical synthesis (dyes)
- In cooling and brake fluids
- In cosmetics (creams, soaps)
- In pharmaceuticals (gels)
- For the production of explosives
- In the food industry
- In degreasing preparations
