ACIDS

TEREPHTHALIC ACID C6H4(COOH)2

other names: PTA, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, an organic compound from the group of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. It contains two carboxyl groups in the para position. Terephthalic acid is a white or colorless solid, poorly soluble in water and alcohols. On an industrial scale, it is obtained by oxidizing paraxylene with oxygen from compressed air. Applications: Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is mainly used as a raw material for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyester fibers and films, polyamide fibers, unsaturated polyester resins, and plasticizers (DOTP).

ACIDS

ISOPHTHALIC ACID (C₆H₄(COOH)₂)

other names: PIA, 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid. An organic compound, an aromatic acid containing two carboxyl groups in the meta position. It is a white, crystalline powder with a slightly unpleasant odor. Soluble in water. On an industrial scale, it is produced by oxidizing m-xylene. Applications:
Isophthalic acid is mainly used as an intermediate for the production of unsaturated polyester resins, for obtaining high-solids coatings and paints – gel coats, as an additive in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is also used in the production of dyes and serves as a substrate in organic synthesis.
